Bean Soup With Broccoli

1 (16 oz.) pkg. Great Northern beans
Ham bone, smoked ham hocks or 4 slices bacon
2 lg. onions, diced
4 lg. cloves garlic, crushed
1 (16 oz.) can tomatoes, crushed
1 lg. bunch broccoli, cut into chunks
Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper


Wash and pick over beans, soak in cold water overnight. Next day: In a large pot, place the meat or ham bone, drained beans, onion, garlic, tomatoes, basil or oregano and cold water to cover the ingredients. Bring to boil, cover and simmer 2 hours or until beans start to soften. Add the broccoli and cook until the beans and broccoli are tender, 1/2 to 1 hour more. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese.
